Nokia Likely To Add EMI To ‘Comes With Music’ Offering

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) looks set to gain EMI’s repertoire to add to the Universal catalogue that will be part of its upcoming Comes With Music pre-bundled music initiative. EMI Finland MD Wemppa Koivumaki told a Helsinki press conference (via Reuters): ”We want to be part of it. I believe strongly that, when it launches we will be there, with a full offering.” Either that’s just local camaraderie with the Finnish handset maker or the label is set to do something innovative…

EMI showed those credentials last year, when, ahead of its takeover, it launched a DRM-free repertoire first with iTunes. Universal one-upped when it debuted its unlimited-access strategy with Nokia and, later, Omnifone, giving consumers unlimited free mobile tunes in return for an upfront payment from the handset maker, and the label remains Comes With Music’s only partner. But, just as EMI’s DRM move and Universal’s “celestial jukebox” play are not exclusive to either iTunes, Nokia or Omnifone, what’s really interesting here is EMI is signifying its emergence in to the jukebox-in-the-sky segment in a way that is unlikely to be limited to mobile. That could mean not just unlimited Robbie Williams on your cellphone - but also on your desktop.

World’s thinnest 8-megapixel cellphone module announced by Samsung

Eight is the new five. In terms of megapixels, that is. As you are well aware, Samsung holds the record for the world’s thinnest cellphones, be it in the clamshell, slider, or candy bar form factor category. How do they do it? Why, by packing the world’s thinnest cellphone parts in their phones, of course. The latest announcement from Samsung brings yet another record-breaking (or is it record setting?) item, an 8.5mm CMOS digital camera module that they will use for their next-generation mobile phones. This will upgrade their current generation 5-megapixel phones to 8-megapixel ones, and as if that wasn’t enough, the camera module also features anti-shake, 1-cm macro mode, face-tracking technology and a smile shutter feature. Expect cellphones to be released with this camera module during the second half of 2008.

BBC iPlayer comes to iPhone

The BBC has launched its first mobile initiative for its growing iPlayer, by launching the service for the iPhone/iPod Touch. The player will only work over wi-fi currently, so if you’re thinking of doing it over Edge - think again.

The BBC team behind the development said they chose the iPhone because it was “optimized” for high quality video playback, but that they would be making the service available to many more mobile platforms very soon.

The BBC has also reached a deal with The Cloud wi-fi firm to provide all BBC online services for free at its 7,500 hotspots according to BBC News.

Nokia will integrate Silverlight on S60 and S40!

Microsoft will demonstrate Silverlight on S60 during the opening keyote at Microsoft’s MIX08 conference on March 5 in Las Vegas. Silverlight is intended to be available to S60 developers later this year with initial service delivery anticipated shortly thereafter for all S60 licensees.   This will allow S60 application developers to use an even wider range of development environments for S60 on Symbian OS than today. Today S60 developers can use: C++ (using native Symbian OS APIs and Open C providing subset of standard POSIX libraries), S60 Web Run-time (supporting standards-based web technologies such as Ajax, JavaScript, CSS and HTML), the Java(TM) language, Flash Lite from Adobe, and Python.”

So one more programming option for S60 and S40 !
